ComED Burnham Bridge

Description of Project:

The project involves the Phase I, Phase II and Phase III deck replacement and pier repair for the 300 foot long, two lane West Ramp from the Burnham Viaduct. The curved ramp drops from a height of 34 feet to the ground level. It was decided to use full depth precast concrete panels supported on composite structural steel girders to expedite construction. High performance concrete was used in the precast panels and post tensioning was applied to the precast panels in the longitudinal direction to keep the transverse joints tight and reduce cracking. The concrete piers were repaired using shotcrete.

Scope of Work:

  • Phase I documents were prepared which included an inspection and preparation of the bridge condition report.
  • Phase II detail design included infrared survey of the concrete piers, preparation of structural calculations, plans and specifications, and construction cost estimate. Plans which include stage construction for 24/7 access were prepared using Microstation V8 and GEOPAK. Also, to provide adequate width temporary shoring, towers were used to support part of the stage on construction precast panels.
  • Phase III work included construction contract strategy, invitation to bidders, preparation of separate bid packages, evaluation of bids, review of shop drawings, and construction management services including onsite observation, (daily reports), concrete testing, and inspection of reinforcement, structural steel and concrete repair.

Value to Client:

The project provided an economical repair strategy for the 76 year old bridge while keeping the bridge open to traffic and building the bridge using accelerated bridge construction methods in 8 months.
