Hot Strip Mill Cooling Water System

Description of Project:

ArcelorMittal retained HOH Engineers to evaluate the feasibility, methods and cost of converting the non-contact cooling water system at the 80” HSM to a closed-loop system.  The current system is “once-through”, discharging plant service water into various drains.  This study identified the users of the service water supply, evaluated the appropriateness of converting these users to a closed-loop system, and developed an implementation plan and a cost estimate for constructing the new closed-loop system.

Scope of Work:

HOH performed field work to document the over 100 users of the non-contact cooling water system and identify potential locations for future dedicated closed-loop facilities.  HOH developed a conceptual design for a 20,000 gpm closed loop system, including  a pump station and evaporative coolers, and developed cost estimates and a construction sequence for implementing the system.

Value to Client:

HOH developed a phased approach to implementation of the closed-loop system to allow continued operation of the mill during construction of the system.
